Brussels residents open their doors to offer shelter after attacks

LONDON — Brussels residents who live near metro stations and airports are opening their doors to people in need of shelter following the attacks that rocked Brussels on Tuesday morning.

People are using the hashtags #PorteOuverte (open door), #ikwilhelpen (I want to help), #OpenHouse and #BrusselsWelcome to invite people who are stranded into their homes. People are also offering spare bedrooms to those who are affected by flight cancellations.

Last weekend, Reese Witherspoon pulled out all the stops for her star-studded birthday party.

The Oscar-winning actress welcomed a slew of actors, singers, and other boldface names to her 40th birthday bash at the Hollywood hotspot Warwick, reports People.

Witherspoon pumped up her partygoers by leading a “Sweet Home Alabama” singalong. Next up came the special performances, one of which happened to be by Taylor Swift. NBD. Swift rallied the crowd by launching into “Shake It Off” and strumming an electric guitar.

World’s First Solar Powered Airport

The southern city of Kochi is now the proud home of the first airport in the world solar energy.

On August 18, the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) -India international largest in terms of passenger traffic to any ordered 12 megawatts (MW) of solar projects fourth airport. The airport already had a solar power plant of 1 MW, which can produce 4000 units of electricity per day.

With its new solar power station, the airport can now produce 60,000 units of electricity per day, which is more than enough to meet their daily needs.

“We initiated a pilot project in February 2013 as part of our plan to shift to renewable energy by setting up a 100 kilo watt unit,” VJ Kurian, managing director of CIAL told Quartz in a telephone interview. “When we found that feasible, we set up a 1MW unit in November 2013.”

“We did not want to be identified as just another airport and be confined to it,” Kurian added.

Pope Francis made his Instagram debut Saturday, and there wasn’t a #brunch, #sunset or #selfie in sight.

“Pray for me,” read the post, with the phrase in nine languages.

Instagram founder CEO Kevin Systrom was apparently there to witness the post.

The pope announced the posting on his Twitter account, explaining the purpose behind it.

The Instagram team met with the pope in Feburary and showed him a bound book featuring 10 historic moments, like the Nepalese earthquake and the surge of Middle Eastern migrants into Europe, that were documented in images. Read more…
